ALZHEIMER'S CARE THAT HAS DEFINED AN INDUSTRY

For almost 30 years, The Bethany Terrace has been a pioneer in dementia care with activity-based, person-centered care.

And, as researchers are coming close to solving some of the mystery of Alzheimer’s disease, The Terrace has continued to offer therapeutic solutions for the person with dementia.

While many facilities offer a specialized unit for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents with periodic activities throughout the day, The Bethany Terrace offers up to 12 hours of supervised one-on-one and group activities.

Activities are based on skill and interest level, centering around hobbies and vocations that are an important part of the residents’ lives. Drawing on abilities and individual preferences helps to lessen disorientation and redirect energies.

No two days are the same and may include: professional entertainment; music and sing-a-longs; pet therapy; outings to area attractions and restaurants; creative and artistic expression; gardening and horticulture; intergenerational programs; and men’s and women’s groups. Support for families and caregivers is also an integral part of the dementia programming at The Bethany Terrace.

A monthly support group for anyone in the community is offered on the third Friday of the month from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., providing information, education…and support!

The Bethany Terrace’s multidisciplinary team works together to nurture the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of both the individual with dementia and their loved ones.

THE BETHANY TERRACE WELCOMES NEW ADMINISTRATOR

Marya Jordan was recently appointed administrator of The Bethany Terrace, a Morton Grove-based health and rehabilitation center. Jordan, who had served as assistant administrator, replaced David Randle, who has assumed the corporate position of chief operating officer of the North Suburban Campus for Bethany Methodist Communities.

“Aside from her exceptional rapport with residents and patients, Marya has demonstrated an extraordinary knowledge of long term care regulations and survey preparedness,” said Randle.

Prior to joining The Bethany Terrace, Jordan’s professional career began as a speech/language pathologist. She then served in management positions as rehabilitation manager, director, assistant administrator and administrator for a skilled nursing facility.

“I’m proud to be a part of such a special community,” said Jordan. “Our staff’s commitment to person-centered care is truly remarkable.”

Marya earned her bachelor’s degree in communication disorders and a master’s degree in speech/language pathology from Marquette University. She and her family live in Wheaton with new puppy, Tucker.

RESPITE CARE A SMART, HEALTHY OPTION FOR CAREGIVING FAMILIES

In the United States today, there are approximately 50 million people who are caring for a loved one at home. And, every day, each of them faces the challenges of a demanding and difficult job that adds up to a critical stress level from time to time.

Respite Care provides a short break for family members that can relieve stress and help promote a new perspective in their care. No one can question that this caregiving is done out of love—but each caregiver must ensure their own health before they become exhausted or ill themselves.

Partners in Healthcare provides home care for as short as one hour to live-in services 24/7 to provide a needed respite for family members to get out of the home—either to do personal errands, attend an event, or just take care of themselves. This home care can either be done as a planned visit or on an emergency basis.

Trained, licensed and bonded professionals visit the home and can assist with the daily activities of cooking/feeding, bathing and personal care, medication supervision, accompanying to an appointment and friendly socialization and companionship. Calls are accepted 24 hours a day at (847) 904-5113.

Many times, family members will want a residential program for their loved one to receive the benefit of 24 hour nursing care, nutritious meals and snacks, housekeeping and laundry services, activities for various physical and cognitive levels, and numerous visitors and volunteers seeing to their needs. The Bethany Terrace offers Respite Care within their intermediate care, and Alzheimer’s care with either private or semi-private accommodations. The community is also a preferred provider for Age Options, formerly the Suburban Area Agency on Aging.

Whether it is during a holiday season, a needed trip out of town, or a short break for the family member’s mental health, both Partners in Healthcare and The Bethany Terrace can offer Respite Care individualized to each situation. For information regarding Respite Care at The Bethany Terrace, call (847) 965-8100.

BMC PRESIDENT, WIFE TEST-DRIVE NEW LUXURY REHAB SUITES

Though he’s the President and CEO of Bethany Methodist Communities, Rev. Dr. Stephen Dahl has rarely required the health services available in his organization. That changed recently for him—and his wife, Sharon, too. They have now experienced the person-centered care offered at The Bethany Terrace, and after “walking the walk” there, they are delighted to “talk the talk.”

With demanding schedules and busy routines, both initially paid scant attention to a few nagging aches and pains. Steve is always active, walking miles on Bethany’s three campuses as he visits residents, makes administrative rounds and rushes to meetings.

Finally, intense pain made it difficult to maintain that pace, and he had hip replacement surgery followed by a stint in the Terrace’s Rehab Program.

“The Terrace became my home for two weeks,” Steve recalls, “and I learned firsthand that we provide superb nursing and therapy. In between PT and OT sessions, I talked with fellow residents, and each was very satisfied with their care. We discussed Bethany’s ‘Called to Care’ mission, and I now know firsthand that our staff truly lives that charge.”

When Sharon fell this past spring and required hip surgery, she found it reassuring that Terrace staff would direct her recovery, too. “I was very pleased with the care Steve received, and my own stay at the Terrace confirms how impressed I am with the entire program. The rehab center has been completely renovated, and with private suites and wonderful meals, it was like visiting a fine hotel. The therapy staff is extraordinary—it’s obvious they are dedicated to a great outcome for every resident.”

Sharon reports the hardest part of her two-week regimen was being away from the family pet, a Golden Retriever named Osborne. “He’d make a great therapy dog,” Sharon says. “Staff welcomed his visits, but he didn’t have overnight privileges!”

The Dahls’ experiences as Terrace clients aren’t unique. One hundred percent of recently-discharged rehab residents say they would recommend The Bethany Terrace to family members and friends—a much higher rate than is reported nationwide.

It is this patient satisfaction that has made The Bethany Terrace a leader in rehab and therapy services on the North Shore.
